This is the meat of the game. I concentrated heavily on this portion of the demo. The menu screens where very important, but this is where I chose to dump the majority of time.

I wanted a nice action packed game screen, nothing subdued about it. A nice large tachometer, as this is a very important tool while driving. Large gear indicator, high contrast speed readout for the racer who likes to see their corner speeds. Up top I put a huge drift score readout which fades from cyan-cold- to red-hot as your score goes up, it will also changes color based on your score multiplier (bonus). The obligatory "Hi Score" is located in the upper right feild to remind you of your target, and your current score is located above the realtime drift score.

Next to the Drift Score is your attack evaluation, it will tell you what technique you use, in rapid succession, and quickly fade out, it also tells you which bonuses you are getting as your score soars. I chose to add the attack evaluation because I wanted the player to feel his drifting ability is really appreciated, aside from the fact it should look awesome to onlookers. I've pulled many nice drifts in Gran Turismo 2, and my friends who know, always will take notice, and ofcourse it feels great to pull off such a drift, but it also feels great to have it applauded. The Attack Evaluation, (my official name for this) would also help give players insight into drifting as far as techniques. This would tie in well to a nice beefy manual, a'la Gran Turismo.

The Lap times indicate your current and current session best laps. Setting a hot lap with a low Drift Score nets you a fastest lap time, but overall, ranks you much lower than those with good lap times and great drift scores. Grip driving is generally faster through a curve, however this is a drifting game, but still even so, it must also be a great simulator to make each drift rewarding. Overall score is somewhat influenced on lap time though: a fast lap will give you a bonus score.

I havent really decided how to weigh in speed in the equation. The game is based on Drifting, but underneath it will be a very good, and SOMEWHAT forgiving physics engine, but its going to be a tough game to master, much like Gran Turismo. It won't be a simple matter of slamming the accelerator, and downshifting, or jerking the wheel, or yanking the side brake. Its all going to have to work together, and each part will come in little doses to help you maintain a drift, and enjoy the feeling of a well executed slide. The physics model would have a nice learning curve so that a seasoned drifter would look like a seasoned drifter next to an amateur.
